Undoubtedly inspired by the maps included in Christie’s novel, Lichter builds a film that reads as a homage and parody of Lev Manovich’s database concept – pushing to the limit the screen saturation of desktop documentaries, and itself becoming a combinatory experiment in the study of styles. The screen becomes both a magician’s hat and an architect’s demented dream, brimming with an endless parade of images (between, within, amongst, around other images). Selected for IFFR’s Harbour programme, the film will be a feast for lovers of repurposed footage and visual spatialisation. Using video-game designs as prime material, as well as fragments from 100 films (of the silent and early sound period), The Mysterious Affair at Styles presents a curious fusion between past and future, and between the iconic power of the archival image and the possibilities of modern technology. While a Hungarian voice-over drives us through the steps of a classical whodunnit, the baroque visuals enact a playful dance with the dense stream of words – alternately poetic and mysterious, cheeky and ironic. In it, we meet Hastings who, on a visit to the country. The Mysterious Affair at Styles takes its title from the first published novel by Agatha Christie (detective Hercule Poirot’s debut), with the text serving as narrative basis for this sumptuous experimental collage-film by Péter Lichter. The Mysterious Affair At Styles is set during the First World War and is Agatha Christies debut novel.

It's a great book for students to read because it causes them to think, to feel, and to analyze the potential effect of unintended consequences. The "violence" in this story only reveals the idiosyncrasies of adults wanting to "save" babies and the much-later and therefore far more convoluted reality that not all teenagers are wanted. To me, the novel is no more disturbing the story of Solomon and the baby from 1 Kings in the Bible. The author manifests this FICTIONAL world to have us process the possibility of a reality in which pro-life and pro-choice extremists have finally come to "agreement." Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly. The point to consider is that, it is not MEANT to be pleasant. As the person in the classroom, I would say I have had many students, literally aghast and horrified as we read, what is obviously, a horrific experience of a child being taken apart (consciously but not in any pain) by a team of doctors and nurses. As an English teacher who has taught this for four years, I have had one parent tell me that her child was uncomfortable with this book. Eventually, despite his protestations Becket was elected to the seat, and as predicted his relationship with the king became strained. Becket was conscious that were he to become Archbishop the two would likely no-longer be friends, and Henry may even come to hate Becket because the king had been infringing on the rights of the Church, which Becket would not allow. It was ultimately Henry who suggested that the vacant Archbishopric of Canterbury Cathedral (the highest Church office in England) go to Becket, even though he initially refused. During this time Becket enjoyed the earthly pleasure of wealth and influence in the state and even led contingents of knights too fight alongside the king. In life, Thomas Becket was a close personal friend and chancellor of Henry II, though he had decided to devote his life to the (Catholic) Church from a relatively young age. Written and performed at a time when fascism was on the rise in continental Europe, the play considers the agency of the individual in resisting temporal authoritarianism. (SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS") Yet 23 years later, here we are with a film that’s a pointed middle finger to all that, and with eyes on its own unlikely golden prize: Director Craig Gillepsie’s alternately humanizing and hilarious biopic of Tonya Harding, with designs to be a major player at this year’s Oscars. The camera footage of Kerrigan bellowing, “Why?” following the incident made her triumphant return to the rink months later, where she performed one of the best skates of her life, all the more heartwarming. Figure Skating Championships, Kerrigan was clubbed on the right knee with a police baton, an attack reportedly orchestrated by Harding’s husband, Jeff Gillooly. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about I, Tonya, the raucous free skate of a biopic of Tonya Harding, is that we’re not, in fact, watching a biopic of Nancy Kerrigan.Īt any other time, it would be easy to see cash-grabbing studios eager to create a nostalgic, inspiring film about the delicate ice princess victimized in one of the craziest sports scandals in history: At the 1994 U.S. A society of single men and prostitutes among whom Eliza moves with the help of her good friend and savior, the Chinese doctor Tao Chien California opens the door to a new life of freedom and independence for the young Chilean.
